The department of Natural Sciences is looking for Programming Python Teaching Assistants for 2020-21. Start date: 16 November 2020.

Job description

The primary role of the teaching assistants will be to provide assistance and feedback to students, and it is planned that support will be delivered by a mixture of asynchronous and synchronous methods.
Teaching assistants will be allocated a group of around 20 students for the duration of the course and it is envisaged that TAs will flexibly and independently adapt their mode of teaching to suit their students.

The teaching position will include some of:

Acting as the primary source of support for a group of around 20 students (10 pairs)
Providing assistance and guidance; resolving issues and giving formative feedback
Organising ad-hoc synchronous sessions with pairs or small groups of students (via e.g. MS Teams)
Responding to student queries (via online chat or forums)
Communicating regularly with module organisers and fellow TAs regarding student progress and issues
Marking take-home exams (mid February)

Exact duties will be adapted to the tutor's experience and availability.

Requirements for role

Working towards a postgraduate research degree (PhD/EngD.)
Experience with Python and Jupyter Notebooks
A desire to gain teaching experience
Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with students and staff
Excellent organisational and time-management skills
Ability to be flexible in terms of research workload and other commitments
Ability to work independently for short periods and as part of a team, recognising when advice / input needs to be sought
