Helping students self-assess
Students need to take responsibility for their personal and professional development, with the tutor acting as a guide rather than the driver.
Tutors can help their students to self-assess by asking them questions about their skills, attributes and values, for example:
Questions like these will elicit immediate ‘off the cuff’ responses, but it is important for students to then reflect more systematically and to record their self-assessments and plans in their PPD log, as a reference point for future tutorials.
The HEA has developed a variety of strategies to encourage students to reflect upon and evaluate their own learning experiences and plan for their own development.
