Why study with us?

The UCL Division of Psychology and Language Sciences offers a research and teaching environment ranked as world-leading across the fields of mind, behaviour and language.

A world-leading research and teaching environment

  • UCL is the top-ranked university in Europe and second in the world for psychology (Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2021) and is rated the best place in Europe to study psychology by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2020

  • UCL is 1st in Europe and 2nd in the world for neuroscience and behaviour, based entirely on quantitative data relating to scientific papers (2020 National Taiwan University report)

  • UCL is 1st in Europe and 2nd worldwide for citations in neuroscience and behaviour, with more than twice as many published papers as any other European university (InCites Essential Scientific Indicators 2020)

  • UCL is ranked 1st for psychology and neuroscience by the UK’s Research Excellence Framework, with UCL rated the top university in the UK for research strength

  • At 1:10.5, UCL has one of the best staff to student ratios of any public UK university (the Complete Guardian University Guide 2020)

  • We offer cutting-edge resources such as extensive laboratories for research in speech and language, perception and cognition, a centre for brain imaging and a behavioural neuroscience laboratory

  • We collaborate with a broad range of interdisciplinary research centres and institutes, both within UCL and beyond

  • We hold a Silver Athena SWAN award, which recognises our commitment to tackling gender inequality in higher education

  • We use our expertise to shape national and local policy. For example, Professor Peter Fonagy OBE is a mental health specialist member on a UK Parliament Expert Panel and our academics are part of a steering group convened by the Duchess of Cambridge to examine how early life experiences shape the human brain

  • Our research and teaching have a significant global impact. For example, our Centre for Behavioural Change works with Action Aid Ireland to integrate behaviour change into their Women's Rights Programme, improving the safety and economic independence of women and girls in Ethiopia, Kenya and Nepal

  • We have many collaborations with industry spanning all of our research areas. For example, we’ve worked with sporting organisations (English Rugby, British Sailing, FA) to improve decision making to enhance performance in competitions, with Unilever to help recognise and avoid stereotyping, and with BlackRock to apply causal models to factor investing

  • Our central London location gives access to one of the world’s most vibrant, cosmopolitan and influential cities, ranked as the best city in the world for university students (QS Best Student Cities 2022)
