Module Aims
- To develop understanding of the different methodological approaches used in qualitative and quantitative research
- To enable students to critically appraise published research relevant to SLT practice and evaluation
- To develop understanding of evidence based practice and levels of evidence
- To understand considerations for questionnaire design and analysis
- To provide an introduction to research design and basic statistical methods used in SLT assessment and research
Module Contents
- Quantitative and qualitative research design, theories and approaches, and their application to SLT research and practice.
- Methods for assessing reliability, validity and sensitivity of data.
- The design and wording of questions in a questionnaire to appropriately achieve study aims.
- Levels of evidence, systematic review and meta-analysis as applied to SLT research and practice.
- Basic descriptive statistics.
- Basic concepts of analysing test scores (including the standardisation of data and the use of z-scores).
- Relationships between variables including confounds, bias and effect size.
- Research practice in the NHS including service evaluation and audit.
