Research and Evidence Based Practice

Module Aims

  • To develop understanding of the different methodological approaches used in qualitative and quantitative research
  • To enable students to critically appraise published research relevant to SLT practice and evaluation
  • To develop understanding of evidence based practice and levels of evidence
  • To understand considerations for questionnaire design and analysis
  • To provide an introduction to research design and basic statistical methods used in SLT assessment and research

Module Contents

  • Quantitative and qualitative research design, theories and approaches, and their application to SLT research and practice.
  • Methods for assessing reliability, validity and sensitivity of data.
  • The design and wording of questions in a questionnaire to appropriately achieve study aims.
  • Levels of evidence, systematic review and meta-analysis as applied to SLT research and practice.
  • Basic descriptive statistics.
  • Basic concepts of analysing test scores (including the standardisation of data and the use of z-scores).
  • Relationships between variables including confounds, bias and effect size.
  • Research practice in the NHS including service evaluation and audit.
