Alexandra Kalpadakis-Smith

My research focuses on visual perception, and more particularly a phenomenon known as visual crowding: objects (such as letters) that are easily recognised in isolation become difficult to recognise when found in clutter. Crowding affects the peripheral vision of adults, the central vision of young children, as well as the central vision in amblyopia (‘lazy eye’). The aim of my PhD is to examine whether these three instances of crowding share the same underlying mechanism using psychophysical methods and modelling.
