Robert Smith

Robert Smith

Dr. Smith received his PhD in Engineering Science and Mechanics from the University of Alabama in 1991, and became a tenured Aerospace Engineering professor there. He was Director of the Intelligent Computing Systems Centre at The University of the West of England from 1997 until 2005. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow and College Teacher in Computer Science at University College London, and Chief Technology Officer of BOXARR, the makers of a tool that helps people understand and make decisions about highly complex systems of interdependency, at real-world scale, in industry, defense, and government. Dr. Smith has authored over 35 journal articles, 10 invited book chapters, and over 75 conference papers on complex-systems-based artificial intelligence and knowledge representation. He has conducted research projects for the U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, NASA, Boeing, NSF, EPSRC, The European Union, DERA, British Aerospace, Airbus, British Telecom, The Bank of England, and The UK Competitive Market Authority. He is a former Associate Editor of The IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, a current Associate Editor of the journal Evolutionary Computation, and he serves on the editorial boards of several other journals.
