First Year Undergraduate Psychology Prize named in honour of Professor Ewart Thomas
University College London has historical associations with eugenics and its dated views about minority groups that are not acceptable. UCL recently issued a formal apology for these associations, and made recommendations on ways to move forward. As part of this, we noted that some of the Psychology prizes in the BSc Psychology programme of the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences (UCL PALS) were named after individuals with these dated views. Members of the BSc Psychology Programme undertook a root and branch review of all their prizes in the summer of 2021. This led to more prizes being named after women and individuals from minority backgrounds who had links with the department. One of the prizes is now named after Ewart Thomas. Ewart kindly agreed to an interview with Peter Howell about his experiences in London and Cambridge.
