Age-related hearing loss is one of the chronic conditions among older people and is a significant risk factor for dementia and social isolation. However, many individuals either refrain from utilising or discontinue the use of hearing aids due to perceived inefficiencies in performance. Addressing this issue, I emphasise the need to improve hearing aids by examining speech perception patterns to identify acoustic features that can enhance intelligibility in the future. In this talk, I will discuss the relationship between age-related hearing loss and my works. Additionally, I will introduce some previous studies, speech perception in Japanese words with vowel devoicing, and the current project. This current research aims to investigate the speech perception of English consonant clusters in individuals with age-related hearing loss through a hearing loss simulation.

About the Speaker
Eri Iwagami
Research Fellow at UCL
I am a JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) overseas research fellow and have been working with Prof. Stuart Rosen and Dr. Tim Green at SHaPS since September 2022. My research has focused on cross-disciplinary research, specifically speech perception in older individuals with age-related hearing loss, since I was a PhD student. My current project has conducted speech perception and production tests to investigate speech perception patterns of English consonant clusters and acoustic cues to improve speech intelligibility. As such, my goal is to contribute to improving hearing aids.
