UCLIC Seminar - Flipping the Classroom

In conventional university lectures, the core material is usually delivered in the class (lecture) room. Students then try and make sense of the material at home. Interactive e-lectures allow the possibility of delivering the material outside the lecture room and then using classroom time to help students make sense of it. The relationship between classwork and homework is thus "flipped". Flipping the classroom is particularly relevant in the context of the paradigm shift in education. This presentation considers the changing nature of today's students and the results of two studies in flipping the classroom. The findings have important implications for how we think about lectures and teaching in the digital age.

About the speaker: Dr Evans joined UCLIC in December last year. He has an international reputation for his use of learning technologies. He received an award for innovative (Student Led) Teaching and the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence. He was nominated for a National Teaching Fellowship Award and received a commendation from the Higher Education Academy in e-Tutor of the Year. Before joining UCL, he worked at Brunel University London, the Open University and London University. He obtained his PhD in the Department of Computing at Imperial College. His current interests include learning interface design, interactivity, innovative technologies and social media for teaching.
