Late Summer Assessments for taught students with resits or deferrals

2 May 2018

Had an exam? How did it go? If you need to re-sit an exam or have deferred your assessment, you may be eligible to take Late Summer Assessments (LSAs).

Late Summer Assessments

For the first time, all UCL students who need to re-sit a centrally-administered UCL exam or have been granted deferred assessment (because of extenuating circumstances), will take LSAs.

The late summer assessment period will run from 20 August to 7 September 2018.

LSAs have been introduced in response to feedback from our students and advice from UK higher education agencies. In the past UCL students had to wait a full year to be reassessed, meaning that graduation, employment opportunities and further study had to be postponed. The introduction of LSAs across UCL in 2018 aligns UCL with the majority of UK universities.

Most UCL students taking these assessments will have been granted a deferral because of illness or other extenuating circumstances at the first attempt. Assessments such as coursework, presentations and practicals will be included in the LSAs.

If you are doing a resit, having failed at the first attempt, you will have your marks capped, meaning that the maximum mark you can get will be a pass.

Aiysha Qureshi, Welfare and International Officer, Students' Union UCL, said:

"I found it incredibly reassuring to know I wouldn't have to wait an entire year before sitting the final exam of my degree just because I was ill on the day. Many students would have previously made attempts despite not being fit to, so we are hoping some of the risks to wellbeing will be mitigated by presenting LSAs as an option."
