7 things to do in London during the Christmas break

18 December 2015

Christmas time has arrived, and while many of you are travelling home for the break, some will be spending it here in London.

Carnaby Street Christmas So, here's our top seven seasonal things to do for those of you staying in the city during the festive season.

1. Winter at Southbank Centre

Set on the South Bank of the Thames and featuring a roller disco, cabaret, music performances, workshops and more, Winter at Southbank Centre returns with a fantastic programme of activities and events, many of them free. The festival runs until 17 January.

2. Volunteering

Homelessness charity Crisis will run its 'Crisis at Christmas' campaign between 23 and 30 December, making Christmas happen for thousands of homeless people at centres across London. The charity is still looking for general and night shift volunteers: find out more and apply on the Crisis website.

3. Ice skating

Ice skating at one of the capital's temporary outdoor ice skating rinks is an ideal winter activity. The Somerset House and Natural History Museum rinks offer skating in stunning surroundings, while the one at the JW3 Centre will be open on both Christmas Day and New Year's Day mornings.

4. Hampstead Heath

Hampstead Heath offers a selection of walking trails, each offering the chance to explore its nature, history and beautiful views. And if you're feeling brave, the annual Christmas morning swim will take place at the Parliament Hill Lido (from 7 to 9:30am) and Hampstead Heath Ponds (from 8am).

5. yellowbluepink at the Wellcome Collection

Your last chance to see Ann Veronica Janssens immersive installation, which explores light and colour by filling a gallery with coloured mist. The installation, part of the upcoming 'States of Mind: Tracing the edges of consciousness' exhibition, is open until 3 January.

6. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Visit the home of UCL's planned new campus - UCL East - and the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Explore the park, swim in the Aquatics Centre or ascend the ArcelorMittal Orbit for stunning views across London (student rates available).

7. Christmas markets

London plays host to several Christmas markets - the perfect place for seasonal handmade gifts and festive food and drink. Among the highlights are the Christmas Market at the Tate Modern and the Real Food Christmas Market in King's Cross, both open until 23 December.
