13 May 2016

SuperNova Student, a free online video series devised by Kurren Sandu, a fifth year medical student at UCL, shares techniques and tips that can help you maximise your revision for exams while reducing your stress levels at the same time.

Kurren is encouraging his fellow students to sign-up to the free online video series that was developed in conjunction with Sophie Tully a Nutrition Scientist and Health Coach.

The 10-minute videos range from tips on revision techniques and how to start your revision day, to how to maintain your study momentum and powering down at the end of the day.

Burn out

The idea for SuperNova Student is born out of Kurren's own struggle to balance his studies, his role as Vice-President of UCLU Men's Basketball team and a busy social life.

He said, "I burnt out in my third year at UCL. I was trying to study for exams, work on a dissertation, as well as train for the National Quarter Finals with my basketball team and somehow fit in hanging out with my friends. My health really began to suffer and my energy levels were wiped out by the end of the academic year.

"The burn out motivated me to start looking for solutions on how to get a work-life balance. Through the UCLU elite athlete programme I got help from Nutrition Scientist and Health Coach, Sophie Tully, and I learned about nutrition and exercise techniques that helped to improve my health and fitness levels."

He added, "In my fourth year I spent a lot of time researching scientifically proven study techniques that would help improve my exam results."

Improved health and exam success

Kurren spent the next year trying out the techniques in his own life to test what really worked from the student perspective. After noticing an improvement in his exam results and reaping the benefits of his improved fitness and health levels, he decided to create the video series to share what he had learned with other UCL students.

He explains, "Student life is really hard and I know I am not the only student who has experienced burn out. There are so many demands on our time, and financial pressures, as well as a really competitive careers marketplace.

"I thought sharing what I had learned via short videos might help other students prevent their own burn out. I hope these videos will help UCL students reduce their stress levels, improve their health and wellbeing as well as their exam results."

For students interested in the free four part video series can sign up to SuperNova Student.
