Pop-Up Library creates 250 extra weekday study spaces for main exam period

1 March 2018

Two major teaching spaces will be transformed into study areas for you to use immediately after Easter college closure, providing 250 extra study spaces every weekday.

In addition, the Lower Refectory will be open for study 24 hours-a-day, including at weekends.

The study spaces - located in the Main Quad and the South Quad - will be promoted under the Pop-Up Library campaign.

Pop-Up Library builds on the 2017 Students' Union UCL initiative, which secured temporary additional study space throughout exams. The Pop-Up Library campaign aims to help you make best use of the study space available, signposting available space, directing you to lesser used libraries and reinforcing the community values of UCL Library Services ongoing 'Share the Space' campaign.

The campaign launches now, with posters, fliers and digital screens promoting the additional study space, so keep an eye out for it!

Sarah Al-Aride, Education Officer, Students' Union UCL, said: "I am very pleased that students will be able to access the pop-ups, which are located close to our two busiest libraries, Main and Science. I am working with UCL Estates and UCL Library Services to ensure these spaces are suitable and comfortable for students during the revision period."

Main Quad teaching spaces block booked for study from 5 April

The Main Quad teaching block (in Front Quad) and the South Quad teaching block (beside the Print Room Café) will be reserved exclusively for study, giving you access to 250 more study spaces from 5 April 2018 until near the end of the main exam period on 25 May 2018. The spaces, which will open from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Friday, will be managed by UCL Library Services staff.

Lower Refectory to open 24/7 for study

In addition, the Lower Refectory will remain open as a learning space twenty four hours a day, seven days a week from the same date (even while Sodexo aren't serving). This will provide another 300 spaces and will be managed by UCL Security from 9pm to 7am each weekday and from 9pm Friday until 7am Monday.

From 9pm on Fridays UCL Security will open Lower Refectory and then close the Pop-Up Library spaces.
