#loveUCL Instagram competition

Enter our monthly Instagram competition using the tag #loveucl, and be in with a chance to win Amazon vouchers and the much-coveted 'Photo of the Year' title.

2019-20 competition


Due to the lockdown disruption to campus life, we're combining the April, May and June competitions into one. Any photos posted by UCL students on Instagram with the #loveUCL hashtag from 30 March 2020 to 24 May 2020 will be eligible and there will be three winners each receiving a £25 Amazon voucher! So, show us what you miss about our beautiful campus - dig through your phone and share those old photos of UCL for your chance to win!

UCL students can enter our monthly Instagram competition – to be in with the chance of winning a £25 Amazon voucher – by tagging your photos of life at UCL with #loveucl.

At the end of the academic year, one of the monthly winners' photos will be picked in a public vote to win 'Photo of the Year' and a £100 Amazon voucher.

Monthly competition 

Each month, a winning photo will be featured on our Instagram page, myUCL, and on the UCL Facebook page.

We’re looking for photos that:

  • capture the dynamism of life at UCL
  • contain original and interesting subject matter
  • demonstrate strong composition
  • for the February Monthly Best Competition (27 January - 23 February 2020), feature the UCL Student Centre.

The 2019-20 competition started at the beginning of first term (Monday, 23 September) with each month's winner being announced after the end of that month.

Due to disruption caused by the lock down, the April, May and June competitions have been rolled into one. Three winners (each receiving a £25 Amazon voucher) will be selected from photos posted with the #loveUCL hashtag between 30 March 2020 and 24 May 2020. Share your old photos of life at UCL to be in the running to win and to be entered in our Photo of the Year competition!

'Photo of the Year'

At the end of the academic year, the winner of each month will be entered into our ‘Photo of the Year’ competition, in a public vote held on our Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn channels.

The winner of ‘Photo of the Year’ will receive a £100 Amazon voucher and the 2nd and 3rd place runners up will receive a £50 and £25 Amazon voucher respectively.


  • All entrants must be a current and enrolled student of UCL.
  • All entrants must be the sole owner and author of their entry.
  • Only photographs posted on Instagram using #loveUCL will be eligible for entry.
  • Submitted entries should: 1) capture the dynamism of life at UCL; 2) contain original and interesting subject matter; 3) demonstrate strong composition.
  • Entrants must provide their full name, course and a caption along with their photograph if selected as a winner.
  • Entrants must agree to the above information and their submitted entry being published in myUCL, on UCL's official social media channels, across UCL's websites and in UCL printed and digital publications.

Note, the Terms and Conditions were updated on 17 January 2020 in order to enable to the February monthly competition to celebrate the UCL Student Centre's 1st birthday with the winner being the best photo of the Student Centre shared in February. They were updated a second time on 21 April 2020 in order to facilitate the running of the last three monthly competitions (April, May and June) after the campus was closed in March indefinitely due to the coronavirus lockdown.

After a year of fantastic submissions from UCL students, the winner of our 2017-18 'Photo of the Year' competition was Shattyk Tastemirova (The Bartlett Development Planning Unit), with a great black and white shot looking out from the portico of the UCL’s Wilkins Building.

loveUCL 2016–17 winner

Over the course of the 2016-17 academic year, we asked students to share their pictures of life at UCL on Instagram. Following the submission of more than 2,000 entries, eight monthly winners were selected and these were put forward for a vote to be named our photo of the year, and its owner the recipient of a £100 Amazon voucher prize.

With more than 40% of the 1,652 votes cast on Facebook and Instagram, Shamita Yasna (UCL School of Management) is our #loveUCL Instagram competition 2016-17 winner, with a perfectly framed shot taken in the Main Library.

"UCL has been an amazing part of my journey and to be able to capture such a moment in a frame gives me so much pleasure," said Shamita. "I only wish I could present more stories like this so others would understand how much this university offers. I've loved every moment of being here."

Our second and third-placed runners-up are Isabelle Arusilor (UCL Bartlett School of Architecture), with a fantastic shot of a sunset in the Main Quad, and Mehmet Davrandi (UCL Eastman Dental Institute), with a stunning composition featuring bacteria growth on an agar plate. They win a £50 and £25 Amazon voucher prize respectively.



    #loveUCL Instagram competition 2015-16 overall winner

    Over the course of the 2015-16 academic year, we asked students to share their pictures of life at UCL on Instagram. Following more than 800 entries and the selection of 28 themed, weekly winners, eight images were shortlisted for the chance to be named the overall winner and to receive a £100 Amazon voucher prize.

    After an incredibly close vote, Ankit Bhatt (UCL Population Health Sciences) is our #loveUCL Instagram competition 2015-16 winner, polling the most cumulative votes on Facebook and Instagram with a stunning shot taken in the Bloomsbury Theatre - congratulations, Ankit!



    #loveUCL Instagram competition 2014-15 overall winner

    Over the course of the 2014/15 academic year, we asked our students on Instagram to share their UCL experience in photographs using #loveUCL.

    We received almost 2,000 entries in total, ranging from stunning shots of UCL's iconic buildings to images featuring events and activities taking place around campus.

    Each month, we selected our 'photo of the month', which was featured in the myUCL all-student e-newsletter, on the official UCL Facebook page and on the official UCL Instagram page.

    Our eight monthly winning images were then put forward for a vote to be named UCL's 'photo of the year', and its owner the recipient of a £100 Amazon voucher.

    With roughly 30% of the 1,000 votes cast on Facebook and Instagram, Shafiq Azid (Language Sciences MSc) is this year's overall winner with his striking shot of the Grant Museum of Zoology's Micrarium.
