18 January 2018

Out@UCL, UCL's LGBTQ+* staff network has a number of interesting and exciting events and initiatives taking place in 2018.

Out@UCL in 2018

LGBT History Month 2018

February is LGBT History Month and the theme this year is 'Geography and Mapping the World'.

In honour of the theme, Out@UCL has teamed up with the LGBT staff networks of LSE, Kings and Imperial to host an evening of performances on Thursday 1 February at 6pm, exploring and celebrating the experiences of queer migrants living in the UK and abroad. Click here to RSVP.

In collaboration with qUCL, UCL's LGBTQ+ research network, Out@UCL will be a holding walking tour of Bloomsbury, uncovering the secrets and history of our neighbourhood's queer past. An opening reception will take place on Friday 9 February at 6pm in the South Cloisters.

UCL Urban Laboratory will be evoking memories of 1930's New York with the event 'Queer Night Scenes' at the Museum of London, celebrating the ways LGBTQ+ people and communities create night-spaces in the city. Click here to RSVP.

Marking the 30th anniversary of Section 28

Introduced in 1988, Section 28 of the 1988 Local Government Act stated that councils should not "intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" in its schools or other areas of their work.

The impact of the act was widespread, causing confusion amongst schools and leading to the stigmatisation of lesbian and gay people in the UK.

Out@UCL and qUCL will be holding a public event on 24 May, marking the 30th anniversary of the act, exploring its impact and its lasting legacies.

Pride in London 2018

Out@UCL will be marching in the Pride in London parade on Saturday 7 July.

After an incredible day in the Pride in London 2017 parade, Out@UCL are delighted to represent UCL once again this year and we are hoping to make it even bigger and better for our staff.

We invite all members of UCL's staff community, whether LGBTQ+ or a friend, to contact out@ucl.ac.uk to express your interest in marching on the day - we promise it will be a day you won't forget!

Friends of Out@UCL

Following the launch of the Friends of Out@UCL allies campaign, we have held a number of ally training sessions, which have all been received exceptionally well. We will be holding our fifth ally training session on Thursday 15 February from 10-1pm. We'll confirm the venue closer to time. The session is informative, collaborative and hopefully will be a good chance to network with other colleagues interested in supporting LGBTQ+ colleagues. If you are interested (and it is definitely suitable for both LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ+ staff) in attending, please RSVP to equalities@ucl.ac.uk. Please also do forward to colleagues or line managers who you think may find this useful.

To find out more about Out@UCL or Friends of Out@UCL, please visit the UCL HR website or follow Out@UCL on Twitter.

If you have an idea for an event, would like to offer feedback or are just keen to work with Out@UCL in 2018, please contact out@ucl.ac.uk.

*a '+' is added to the LGBTQ+ abbreviation to ensure we are inclusive of all minority sexual or gender identities who do not identify as either lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer.
