Archway campus to be vacated by end of October

The Campus was purchased by UCL and MU in 1998 from the NHS; but following a review earlier last year, it was deemed unsuitable to continue to accommodate higher education provisions in its current state. The Campus, which was originally the Holborn Union Infirmary which opened in 1879, is not suited for university use and a prohibitive level of investment would be required to update the campus to an acceptable standard.

Over the course of this summer, the groups (from the UCL Medical School and the UCL Division of Medicine and Engineering) occupying the Campus have been relocated to the Whittington Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, Charles Bell House, the UCL Medical School building and Wolfson House.

The new locations are a mix of permanent or temporary solutions, and all with the goal of enhancing UCL's reputation as a provider of world class research, teaching and learning; and ultimately enhancing the overall student experience.

Professor Jane Dacre, UCL Medical School, expressing her satisfaction with how the major decant programme of works was executed, said: "We are very pleased with the new space for the Medical School. UCL Estates have led the process with calm efficiency, and have managed to move UCL Medical School staff to new offices, with the minimum of fuss. The move was extremely well orchestrated, and we are very grateful for the support we were given. The space looks clean, contemporary, and fit for purpose for a modern Medical School."
