Every year The lancet hold a competition encouraging researchers to write two thousand words on any topic of medical importance around a theme, which this year was "Take us on a journey".

" "I wrote about a patient I had seen when I was working in the memory service and the essay is also about the importance of family support in dementia care. I am an Old Age psychiatrist and have been working in dementia services for several years. My research is also in dementia and UCL has a strong history of dementia research, particularly in developing interventions to help those with dementia and their carers. I wanted to convey some of the struggle that people with dementia and their families face when a person starts to decline but also the hope that support from families can bring to people who are losing their memories. So I was really honoured to win the prize and hope that it helps to highlight the importance of good support and care for all people with dementia."
