Three UCL led research projects granted EU funding

1 March 2012

Three UCL research teams have been successful in obtaining funding from the most recent European Union Health call entitled Health Innovation 2.

Professor Judith Breuer

Professor David McAlpine (UCL Ear Institute), Professor Judith Breuer (UCL Division of Infection & Immunity) and Professor Alimuddin Zumla (UCL Division of Infection & Immunity) have all been awarded funding for their projects for three years.

There were nineteen proposals shortlisted for funding, three of which will be coordinated by UCL; consequently UCL is taking a leadership role in over 15% of the projects funded in this area.

Professor McAlpine's research is focusing on Advancing Binaural Cochlear Implant Technology, to improve hearing outcomes in the severely and profoundly deaf. Professor Breuer will lead a consortium working on novel technologies for pathogen sequencing. Professor Zumla is going to be developing a system to rapidly detect serious respiratory tract infections. Each of the three projects will receive between €4 million and €6 million for three years.

Professor Zumla said "I am delighted to receive this award since it consolidates UCL's leadership of global infectious diseases research and development. This exciting grant award will further enhance our collaborative activities with University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and with our European colleagues in the fight against respiratory infections, which are responsible for 6 million deaths annually.

"It provides an ideal opportunity for us to further develop a unique multidisciplinary network of basic scientists, molecular biologist, microbiologists and clinicians linked in with industry to work in unison to achieve a multiplier effect in improving the clinical management outcomes of killer respiratory infections".

The final and largest Heath call of the Framework, Programme 7, will be launched in Spring 2012. A Health call workshop will be held at UCL on 2 May 2012. Potential applicants should contact the European Research and Development Office, information of which is at the link below.
