New student centre to be created on Bloomsbury campus

14 February 2013

UCL has begun the process of creating a new student centre on campus in Bloomsbury.

Student Centre

Following an initial period of consultation with UCL students (supported by the UCL Union) and discussions with UCL staff, work has begun on a design process that will result in a new student centre being built on the empty space between the Bloomsbury Theatre and 26 Gordon Street.

UCL President and Provost Malcolm Grant explained: "I see the new student centre as a truly transformative project. It will provide our students with wholly new facilities and fresh educational opportunities. It will build on the best we have seen elsewhere around the world, and on what we have learned from listening to our students through widespread internal consultation. It will help us be true to the promise in our 10-year strategy of being among the most highly regarded universities in the world for the quality of our students' experience."

The centre will be available to UCL students from all faculties. Planning and consultation will be a continual process, as a result, UCL is looking for students and staff to have their say on what this new Student Centre should contain.

With more consultations and events to follow, we have already been listening hard to students across UCL to understand what they want from the new centre.

Professor Anthony Smith

On 25, 26 and 27 February, there will be an exhibition in the Front Lodge and the planning team will be on hand between 12pm and 2pm every day to hear your thoughts and find out what the UCL community would like to see in the new Student Centre. There will also be an online survey where students and staff can have their say.

Professor Anthony Smith, UCL Vice-Provost (Education), explained: "The new Student Centre is set to be one of the most significant building projects in UCL's history and is an important example of our commitment to giving our students a truly outstanding experience commensurate with UCL's global standing.

"With more consultations and events to follow, we have already been listening hard to students across UCL to understand what they want from the new centre. As the project sponsor, I am keen that the listening process continues, so do please get involved with the upcoming opportunities to air your views."

The building of a new student centre is part of the UCL Bloomsbury Masterplan.
