UCL hosts a celebration of all things green

12 October 2012

Between 16 and 18 October, the Quad and South Cloisters are hosting a vibrant celebration of all things green.

Green Week UCL, hosted by Green UCL, aims to explore different ways to be environmentally friendly at UCL. Each day will have a different theme, with different stands and activities in the Quad. A poster competition will also run on Tuesday and Wednesday in the South Cloisters showing environment-related work from across UCL's disciplines.

Tuesday 16 October is 'Food Day', which aims to show how to make a difference with the food you eat. Attractions will include a live demonstration of how to make veggie burgers and a free seedling to take away with you, provided you have something reusable like a paper coffee cup to keep it in.

Wednesday 17 October is 'Materials Day', which will explore how items can be reused. Visitors will be able to take part in a giant clothes and book swap organised with MODO, the UCLU fashion society. There will also be a live demonstration of the Waste Action Reuse Portal (WARPit), which provides an easy way to exchange unwanted items within UCL. Staff will be able to use WAPRit to claim a free reusable coffee mug at the stand.

Thursday 18 October is 'Transport Day', which will teach visitors about different ways of travelling to UCL. You will be able to take part in the 'exchanging places experience' by getting into the cab of a lorry and seeing how drivers of large vehicles view cyclists and pedestrians in their mirrors. Free cycle maintenance and bike tagging, as well as host of other cycle-related activities, will also be on offer.

'Mapping for Change' will run on each day, looking to map the sources of our clothing and food and explore the different journeys that they and we took to get to UCL.

Rosie Willatt (Green UCL), the event organiser, explained: "Green Week UCL will be a fantastic opportunity to explore different aspects of environmental sustainability at UCL. There will be loads of freebies (free coffee every day!) and activities, DIY planting on Tuesday, exchanging your way to a whole new wardrobe on Wednesday and getting into the driver's seat of a tipper truck and bike on Thursday. The poster competition will provide a great display of environment-related work at UCL, the prize will be people's choice so come over to help judge the posters!"
