  • UCL has received a Bronze Award from the EcoCampus scheme.

EcoCampus is a HEFCE funded scheme which enables higher education institutions to develop their own environmental management system. Further information about the scheme can be found on the EcoCampus website at the link above.

Given the size, complexity and geographical spread of UCL's estate, the initial EcoCampus programme has been limited to approximately 80 buildings around the Bloomsbury area (including the UCL Institute of Child Health). However, a representative range of academic, support and residential activities are included within this collection of buildings. The intention is to extend UCL's EcoCampus across the entire estate once the environmental management system has been developed.

The requisite planning activities were completed in August 2010 and an audit by EcoCampus was successfully completed. As a result, UCL has been issued the EcoCampus Bronze award.

UCL's EcoCampus implementation team is now aiming for a silver award and has embarked upon the implementation activities, which include an assessment of the environmental impacts of the institution and the setting of objectives and targets for controlling those impacts.

UCL has been a member of the EcoCampus scheme since November 2009 and the project is overseen by the estates and Facilities Division. For further information please contact Tony Overbury, the UCL EcoCampus implementation manager.

    UCL Context

UCL is participating in the Higher Education Carbon Management Programme of the Carbon Trust and has a clear plan to reduce carbon emissions by 10 per cent by the year 2013. Twenty two projects have been identified which will engage both students and staff in the challenge of reducing carbon. The plan has been accelerated in response to the 10:10 challenge with thirteen projects being initiated this year.
