UCL Careers Service will hold a graduate scheme summer school in September.

The summer school will run from three days beginning on Wednesday 15 September, and will offer a bespoke programme of activities designed to give UCL's graduating students a headstart for schemes opening for applications in Autumn 2010.

Graduate schemes and internships are offered by many larger employers looking to recruit future talent and are seen as a fast-track route to career progression. There is often a high volume of competition for places.

The programme of activities at the summer school includes:

  • an introduction to the UK graduate labour market and the graduate schemes on offer
  • the opportunity to meet and hear from staff at organisations offering graduate schemes
  • an application 'toolkit' including workshops on CVs and applications, aptitude tests, interviews and other assessment centre techniques
  • a plan of how to approach the coming months and how to get the most out of UCL Careers Service.

David Carter from UCL Careers Service said: "We're always looking for ways to give UCL students the best possible chance of achieving their career goals. Competition for graduate schemes and internships has never been more intense and this summer school is an essential guide for success. It will give our students the chance to learn more about the opportunities offered, meet graduate recruiters and improve their application and interview techniques."

All registered UCL postgraduate and GradClub members are eligible to attend.  For more details and to register, click on the link above.

UCL context

UCL has a radical multi-million pound package of activity in place to support London businesses during the economic downturn and to prepare UCL's own students for entry into a difficult employment market. Following a successful bid to the Higher Education Funding Council, UCL is using £2.5 million to provide:

  • internships for UCL students with local businesses
  • places for students and local people on business language training courses
  • employment and entrepreneurship training discounts on tuition fees at taught masters level
  • additional investment in UCL Careers Service.
