UCL opposes sale of Shakespeare Folios

4 September 2013

Commenting on the proposed sale of rare Shakespeare Folios by the University of London, Dr Paul Ayris, Director of UCL Library Services, said: "UCL (University College London) has expressed its opposition to the sale of a set of four Shakespeare Folios from the Sterling Bequest by the University of London.

"Housed in the Senate House Library, this rare set of four Folios are of great academic importance as they represent the collection of Shakespeare's works by his colleagues and friends.

"UCL and the UCL Library Committee have not been properly consulted on the proposed sale, and they believe that any attempt to sell the Folios would be misguided and ill-advised. We believe that the sale of these four Folios would also have wider implications for other libraries in London, indeed for all research libraries in the UK, especially at a time when research libraries are trying to showcase their Special Collections and to use them as vehicles for fundraising.

"As a result, we completely oppose the attempt by Senate House to sell this material and urge the University of London to think again."
