UCL climbs Shanghai world rankings to 18th place

17 August 2015

UCL has risen to 18th place in the new Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published this week by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, making it one of only three UK universities in the top 20.

The ARWU has been publishing its ranking of the world's top 500 universities since 2003, making it the longest standing of the international university rankings.

Dame Nicola Brewer, UCL Vice-Provost (International), said:

"The past year has seen a number of fantastic achievements across the UCL community, including the award of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine to Professor John O'Keefe, our results in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 and the launch of our new Global Engagement Strategy, all of which have helped to confirm our position as London's Global University.

"It is reassuring to see that UCL's performance attracts consistently high rankings, although no single table can fully reflect UCL's distinctive strengths and it is important that we do not rely on university league tables to communicate the high standards of our research and education.

"However, UCL's position in the well regarded Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings, in which we have risen two places from last year, is a pleasing recognition of our mission to deliver globally relevant impact in research, education and enterprise for the long term benefit of humanity."
