UCL researchers elected to British Academy

15 July 2016

Four academics from UCL have recently been elected as Fellows of the British Academy, in recognition of their outstanding research.

British Academy Fellows

The new UCL fellows are:

  • Professor Robyn Carston (UCL Linguistics)
  • Professor Susanne Kuechler (UCL Anthropology)
  • Professor Nilli Lavie (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience)
  • Professor Sophie Scott (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience)

A total of 42 UK academics were elected as Fellows by the Academy during their 2016 Annual General Meeting.

The newly elected fellows will play a vital role in the work of the Academy by encouraging younger researchers, engaging in public discussion of the great issues and ideas of our time and contributing to policy reports.

Professor Sir David Cannadine, newly elected President of the British Academy, said: "In more ways than one, these are challenging times, for the Academy, the people it represents and the values it embodies. The current climate of opinion seems ever more hostile to academic excellence, intellectual distinction and evidence-based research, and to humane tolerance and liberal internationalism. These are the essential verities and transcendent truths that the Academy was established to recognise and promote, and during my presidency I am determined to do all I can to proclaim, safeguard and reaffirm them."

The British Academy is the UK's expert body that supports and speaks for the humanities and social sciences. The academy aims to inspire, recognise and support excellence and high achievement in these fields, both in the UK and internationally, and seeks to increase public understanding of how the humanities and social sciences contribute to our economic, social, cultural and individual well-being.
