Staff and postgraduate students in UCL History of Art today received their warmest ever welcome to the academic year.

A mystery well-wisher sent the department 71 bouquets of flowers and boxes of chocolate, addressed to its 14 members of staff, 23 PhD researchers and 34 MA students. Along with the gift was a card, addressed simply 'Welcome to a new year'.

Members of department are surprised but delighted by the gift, with one recipient admitting: "I've never been sent flowers before".

Dr Tom Gretton, Head of UCL History of Art, said: "We have no idea who they're from, but we're delighted and grateful".
