UCOpera brings Schubert to the UCL Bloomsbury

The opera was written in 1821 and influenced by Weber's 'Der Freischutz', which premiered in Vienna at that time. Like Weber's work, 'Alfonso und Estrella' is a love story set in the fantastical outdoor world of the forest.

Starring Tyrone Landau and Tamsin Coombs in the title roles, and directed by Stephen Barlow, the production follows UCOpera's critically acclaimed 'Whittington' (Offenbach) in 2005 and 'Vanda' (Dvorak) the previous year.

UCOpera, founded in 1951, is renowned for bringing rarely performed operas back into the public eye. In total it has staged 12 British premieres and three world premieres, including the first performance of Beethoven's Leonora in 1969 and the complete version of Cesar Franck's Hulda in 1994.
