20 May 2015

UCL has partnered with the Unite Foundation to offer three accommodation scholarships to care leavers and young people who are estranged from their parents.

The Unite Foundation Scholarships will cover university accommodation, provided by Unite Students at their residence on St Pancras Way, and an annual cost-of-living allowance of £4,000 for the duration of the student's degree.

The Unite Foundation was established in 2012 by Unite Students, the UK's largest provider of purpose-built student housing, to enable higher education access to young people for whom access to a secure home is of particular importance. UCL is the latest university to partner with the Foundation, which currently works with seven universities across the UK to offer scholarships to students most in need.

Professor Anthony Smith (UCL Vice-Provost, Education & Student Affairs) said: "UCL is one of the world's leading multidisciplinary universities with a tradition of openness and inclusivity.

"Our partnership with the Unite Foundation will allow us to support access to higher education for those whose participation would otherwise be financially difficult."

Wayne Hemingway OBE, fashion designer and Unite Foundation patron, attended UCL in the early 1980s. He said: "Leaving home and going to uni at UCL was life-changing and opened up a world of exploration, opportunities and new experiences and new people from all backgrounds.

Our partnership with the Unite Foundation will allow us to support access to higher education for those whose participation would otherwise be financially difficult.

"I came from a modest background and was supported by my local council to get to university. Today, that sort of support does not exist.

"It's touching that the charity I am proud to call myself a patron of is doing such a fantastic thing in partnership with my old haunt."
