UCL ranked 8th best university in QS world rankings

This achievement - up one place from last year - marks UCL’s 15th consecutive year in the world’s top 10, a milestone that reflects the extraordinary strength of our community and our sustained leadership across key measures.

We are ranked among the very best (top 1%) globally for academic and employer reputation, and place second in the world for international research networks and third globally for sustainability.

UCL’s President & Provost, Dr Michael Spence, said: “Improving our ranking within a highly competitive global top 10 is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the strength of our community, our pioneering research, and the impact of our global partnerships. As we mark our 200th year, we continue to innovate, push the boundaries of knowledge and strive for excellence in everything we do.”

In addition, earlier this week U.S. News & World Report placed UCL ninth in the world in its 2026-2027 Best Global Universities ranking, which evaluates more than 2,250 institutions based on academic research and reputation. UCL was named the third-best university in Europe, after Oxford and Cambridge.

This shapes where the best people choose to build their careers and change the world; thanks to their excellence, UCL continues to be that choice."

Professor Paola Lettieri FREng, UCL Vice-Provost (Strategy) said: “Being named the eighth best university in the world is brilliant news and recognises the amazing work of staff and students across UCL. This result in the year that we mark our 200th birthday gives us one more reason to celebrate.”

Earlier this year, the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject saw UCL rank in the top 10 globally in 12 subject areas, led by repeated number one positions in Education, led by the UCL Institute of Education, and Architecture & the Built Environment, led by The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment. UCL also ranks third in four different subject rankings: Archaeology, History of Art, Library & Information Management, and Pharmacy & Pharmacology, alongside other top 10 rankings for Anthropology (4), Geography (5), Psychology (5), Medicine (6), Biological Sciences (9) and Development Studies (10).

Both the QS and U.S. News & World Report rankings assess universities using a range of indicators, including academic reputation, citations and international collaboration.
