Student Partnership Committee update: Teaching on Wednesday afternoons policy

25 March 2025

We keep Wednesday afternoons free for you to participate in extra-curricular activities and support your overall UCL experience.

Following feedback at a Student Partnership Committee (the senior committee for student partnership at UCL) meeting earlier in March, we are reminding staff and students of our 2024-25 policy on Teaching on Wednesday afternoons

The policy outlines that all teaching should finish at 12.50pm on Wednesday afternoons, so that you can take part in extra-curricular activities as part of your overall UCL experience.

Any decision to hold classes on Wednesday afternoons must be approved by your Faculty’s Education Leadership and also discussed and agreed with all students involved.

Please contact your academic rep or a member of staff in your Department if you have a question about how this relates to your course.

About Student Partnership at UCL

Our Student Partnership Committees are part of our ongoing commitment to increase the importance of the student voice in education at UCL.

Previously known as Staff Student Consultative Committees, the SPCs all report into a central Student Partnership Committee made up of senior UCL staff members, academic reps, and representatives from the Students’ Union. This approach encourages strong partnership between departments and student representatives.

We are also continuing to collaborate with your Students’ Union across other areas of work relating to education and the student experience, including next steps for our shared Student Life Strategy.

Find out more about student feedback and how you can make a difference on the You Shape UCL pages, and look out for further updates around improvements across the university.

Professor Kathryn Woods, Pro-Vice-Provost (Education - Student Academic Experience) says: “Thanks to all of you involved in the Student Partnership Committees for your collaboration, as we work to make positive improvements together and shape your time at UCL.”

Ana Boikova, Activities & Engagement Officer, Students’ Union UCL, says: "It’s essential to recognise the significant role extracurricular activities play in shaping a student's overall university experience. I’m delighted to have had the opportunity to amplify the student voice through the Student Partnership Committees, as I know these activities are key to enhancing wellbeing and fostering a strong sense of community and belonging at UCL. With Wednesday afternoons dedicated to field sports, students can engage in these activities without affecting their academic progress. Any decision to hold classes on Wednesday afternoons must be approved by the Faculty Education Leadership and also discussed and agreed with all students involved."
