Spotlight on... Han Wu

What is your role and what does it involve? 

I manage the Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Nano characterisation Suite in UCL Chemical Engineering, and lead UCL-wide training on techniques such as SAXS, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), and thermal analysis. My work supports research, builds community, and mentors users across disciplines. 

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role? 

I’ve been at UCL since 2010, progressing from Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to Technician to Research Lab Manager. Before that, I completed a short PDRA project with Professor Tony West at the University of Sheffield after my PhD on crystallisation and polymorphism. 

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of? 

I’m especially proud of co-authoring a Science (2023) paper that used SAXS to monitor amorphous ice transformations from −196 °C for the first time – a breakthrough in low-temperature materials research. Publishing a paper in Science was beyond anything I ever imagined – especially as a technician. It truly felt like completing a lifelong mission as a researcher. I never thought I’d reach that peak! 

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list 

I’m leading a two-day Python course for UCL technical staff through Technician Learning, Leadership, Innovation, Development and Excellence in Research (Tech LLIDER), a UCL-wide tech network, and the Faculty of Engineering Sciences Technical Staff Network (FES-TSN), to bridge skills gaps and support career development. As the LLIDER lead, and Chair of FES-TSN, I prioritise coordinating logistics, funding, and learning outcomes. This is just one of the events I organise through these two new platforms for technician learning and networking. Next up is a visit to the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL) for our technical community. 

What is your favourite album, film and novel? 

Gone with the Wind – especially the quote: “After all, tomorrow is another day.” 

What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)? 

I’m terrible at telling jokes, but I love hearing them! 

Who would be your dream dinner guests? 

My sister, who passed away five years ago. 

What advice would you give your younger self? 

The ceiling is your limit – don’t let others define it for you. 

What would it surprise people to know about you? 

I used to be an athlete in running and swimming, but now I’m less sporty – even though I’m active working in the lab. Still, I’ve never managed to learn skating! 

What is your favourite place? 

Anywhere my family is – that’s home to me.
