Professor Wendy Carlin awarded prestigious Royal Economic Society medal

2 February 2023

Professor Wendy Carlin (UCL Economics) has been awarded the inaugural RES Medal for Services to the Economics Profession by The Royal Economic Society.

Professor Wendy Carlin

The RES medal is a new annual award by The Royal Economic Society to recognise an individual who has made an outstanding and lasting contribution to the economics profession in one or more of three dimensions: promoting economics; supporting economists; or improving diversity.

The judging panel noted Professor Carlin’s outstanding work on CORE Econ and contribution to improving diversity in the profession in particular.

Professor Carlin said, “I’m delighted to have been awarded the inaugural RES Medal for Services to the Economics Profession. This is tremendous recognition for the CORE Econ project – which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary – and will provide more impetus to its work for a more just, sustainable, and democratic world in which citizens are empowered to address the most pressing societal problems.”

Professor Antonio Guarino, Head of UCL Department of Economics said, “Many, many congratulations to Wendy on being awarded this prestigious award. It is an impressive recognition of her outstanding contribution to our large community.”

Professor Carlin is a Professor of Economics in the Economics Department at UCL, Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research and external professor at the Santa Fe Institute. Her research is on macroeconomics, institutions and economic performance, the economics of transition, and the evolution of economic research and education. Her fourth macroeconomics book, subtitled ‘Institutions, instability, and inequality’, co-authored with David Soskice, was published this year.

Professor Carlin is a member of the Expert Advisory Panel of the Office for Budget Responsibility, leads the CORE Econ project, which is changing economics education around the world, and is co-director of the Stone Centre on Wealth Concentration, Inequality and the Economy at UCL. She was awarded a CBE for services to economics and public finance in 2015 and in 2022, elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Professor Carlin will receive her medal at this year’s Royal Economic Society and Scottish Economic Society Annual Conference in April.
