Spotlight richard jackson

What is your role and what does it involve?

I am UCL’s Director of Sustainability – a role that involves working across the University to deliver the sustainability commitments which we set out in the 2019 Sustainability Strategy.

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

I’ve now been at UCL for 11 years prior to which I worked as Head of Sustainability for the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

Obviously, the work at both the ODA and UCL have been important to me. On the Olympics, I believe we established the bar for delivering ambitious sustainability goals across complex regeneration projects – something which is still regarded as a benchmark for the UK construction industry. The lessons I learned from this project have stayed with me and helped to guide some of the things which I’ve done at UCL.

At UCL, I am proud of what the Sustainability team has achieved over its 11 years – reflected in the number of people who work with us across the University. Last year, we had over 100 teams helping us to tackle our impact in UCL offices and labs.

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list.

Obviously, I am working to drive forward our commitment to be net zero by 2030. This requires a change in the way we operate – to reduce unnecessary energy use and waste - and we will need everyone to play a part.

What is your favourite album, film and novel?

Album – Trans-Europe Express (Kraftwerk); Film – Belleville Rendezvous; Novel – Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)?

Went to the zoo the other day but there was only one animal…..Shih Tzu!

What advice would you give your younger self?

Go for a bike ride!

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I love maps!

What is your favourite place?

I lived in Kichijoji in Tokyo for 3 years and still miss the buzz of the town.
