UCL podcasts for Black History Month and beyond

20 October 2022

Black History Month 2022 at UCL is underway, with a series of talks and events. We couldn’t miss this opportunity to revisit some of UCL's podcasts about Black lived experience, that highlight the diversity within our community and also tackle broader questions.

For Black History Month 2022 we're celebrating the achievements, rich history, cultural heritage and the legacy of people of Afro- Carribean heritage with a roster of informative events and talks

In addition to these activities, we thought it would be a good opportunity to showcase some podcasts that not only highlight black lived experience, but also approach wider systemic questions about racialization and racism. Our approach is wide-ranging, considering the global and also the local, as we feature voices from our own UCL community.

We’ve decided to focus on three main podcast series to mark Black History Month. Halle McCarthy, Senior Campaigns Officer, who manages and oversees podcasts elaborates more about these choices.

It is clear there is a wealth of lived experience, talent, and compelling testimony amongst members of UCL's Black community. When deciding how to capture this, it is important to acknowledge that these podcasts highlight only a tiny fraction of the diverse experiences of professional and academic staff, broader questions about racism, global issues concerning the diaspora whether that's in relation to unity, universal experience or other issues. A lot of great content has already been produced, but we are always seeking to develop more highly produced material that outlines the wealth of contribution UCL's Black community have made. Do approach us with any ideas you want to explore. We are always keen to develop new talent, encourage important conversations to flourish, ask the bigger questions and above all, support the community. If you have any suggestions, please email podcasts@ucl.ac.uk - Halle McCarthy, Senior Campaigns Officer.

Before we look at the podcasts in more detail, if you weren’t able to tune in at the beginning of October, you can revisit our special Lunch Hour Lecture, chaired by the Provost, Dr Michael Spence, with Dr Rochelle Burgess (UCL institute for Global Health): Where is home? Mapping the mental health impacts of the Windrush Scandal.

Podcasts for Black History Month
Black Urbanisms

This four-part podcast series from UCL Urban Laboratory explores what the term ‘Black Urbanisms’ can offer us as we think about cities and urban experience. The episodes explore concepts in relation to the racialized city, blackness and the city, land governance in African cities, coloniality and the impositions of Western notions on health care projected onto the city amongst other areas.

Black Lives at UCL

This three part podcast series explores the lived experiences of UCL’s Black staff and students through the lens of higher education with the intention of  amplifying their voices. You'll hear from an academic, a member of Professional Services staff and a student as they discuss their experiences of race, racialisation and systemic racism, and explore what UCL needs to change in order to be better. The series is accompanied by a video from the Provost, Dr Michael Spence, highlighting why it's important to listen to this series and a shift forward for UCL. It is hosted by Tunde Banjoko OBE, a social justice advocate, UCL alumnus and the founder of multiple initiatives such as Making the Leap, the UK Social Mobility Awards and Black Charity Leaders.
