Industrial action at UCL, 14–16 November 2022

7 November 2022

Some security workers employed by Bidvest Noonan and working at UCL are to go on strike on 14, 15 and 16 November, and into the early morning of 17 November, over pay and conditions.

Our colleagues in security do vital jobs for UCL and we are committed to ensuring that our outsourced colleagues are rewarded fairly in line with our staff. UCL’s Security workforce is represented by a recognised trade union, Unison. Following positive and productive negotiations between Unison and UCL, we have invested over £10m per year to harmonise pay and benefits for our outsourced colleagues – who are employed under the same terms and key conditions as in-house staff.

In 2021, we were officially recognised as a London living wage employer and have incorporated a minimum London living wage requirement into standard terms and conditions for our external suppliers.

We respect the rights of colleagues to undertake strike action and have been working closely with Bidvest Noonan to put mitigation measures in place across these three days. We do not expect any disruption to UCL’s Security services and anticipate the impact on staff and students to be minimal, with all teaching activity going ahead as planned.

We do expect that there will be picket lines outside a number of UCL buildings, and have published information and advice for students on UCL Student News.

We will continue to work with our recognised trade union partners to ensure that all colleagues at UCL are rewarded fairly for their work.
