UCL announces appointment of new Director of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)

28 February 2022

After an extensive international search, we are delighted to announce the appointment of UCL’s next Director of EDI, Aloma Onyemah.

Aloma Onyemah

Aloma joins UCL today, 28 February, from University Hospitals Leicester, where she was Head of EDI. In this role Aloma was responsible for designing and delivering EDI programmes affecting 1.4m patients and nearly 20,000 staff. She was instrumental in ensuring that EDI priorities are central both to workplace culture and the delivery of health and social care services.

Before she worked in the NHS, Aloma was Head of EDI at Sheffield Hallam University, where she was responsible for programmes that produced significant diversification of both staff and student bodies, and of senior leadership. She also led the establishment of successful staff diversity networks, through which over 700 active members contributed to the university's EDI work.

Professor Sasha Roseneil, Pro-Provost (Equity & Inclusion) said: “I am very pleased to welcome Aloma to UCL to lead our EDI team. Her wealth of knowledge and experience makes her incredibly well-placed to build on our existing strengths and achievements, and to ensure that UCL forges ahead with our commitments to making UCL a more equitable and inclusive institution, in which everyone is able to thrive and diversity is celebrated.”

Aloma Onyemah said: "I am delighted to be joining UCL as Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and building on the significant achievements made by the University in advancing equality, promoting diversity and inclusion. I am looking forward to working collaboratively with colleagues from across the University community to make a positive and lasting difference to the lived experience, and sense of belonging for all of our students and staff."
