13 October 2021

UCL’s media team is calling on academics to sign up to the recently relaunched Find an Expert media database.

The UCL Find an Expert database currently features over 900 world-leading experts from a diverse range of backgrounds who welcome inquiries from journalists on almost any subject.

As one of the world’s top ten leading universities, our academics are widely respected around the globe in their specialist fields, have a track record of quality research and are committed to communicating their work responsibly to the wider public; the database helps them to share their expertise more widely through media interviews or speaking engagements.

We are now encouraging more UCL academics to sign up to the database or update their details, so that people in and outside of the UCL community can find out who is available for media and public engagement opportunities.

Registering only takes a few minutes, as information is pulled from your IRIS profile once you sign in. All it takes is to fill in fields such as keywords relevant to your expertise and a summary of your research areas and media experience. If you are comfortable giving media interviews in more than one language, please tell us which languages, as we regularly receive inquiries from international media outlets.

UCL’s media team also offers specialist media training; please contact the UCL media relations team if you are interested in attending a group training session in your faculty or department. Each faculty has a dedicated media relations manager who is available for any queries about working with the media to promote your work and raise your profile; this may include writing and disseminating press releases, coordinating communications strategies with internal and external colleagues, and advising on media engagement.

The database enables journalists to contact experts directly when looking for an expert to comment on a breaking news story or to be interviewed for an in-depth report. They can search the database by keyword or by name to find the right academic to provide their expert view and analysis.

UCL’s media relations team is also available 24/7 to support journalists and to help with urgent inquiries, as experts can privately provide out-of-hours contact details to the media team.

The Find an Expert platform can also be used by policy professionals to find UCL experts for policy engagement purposes. For more information on academic-policy engagement, please contact the UCL Public Policy team.
