New Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) announced at UCL

Professor Kathleen Armour, a leading expert in learning and teaching, will join UCL as its new Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) from January 2022.

Currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Birmingham, Professor Kathleen Armour has extensive experience of leadership and research in education and professional learning. She takes up a crucial role at UCL with responsibility for education leadership, the quality of student experience and planning for future possibilities in lifelong education.

In her current role, she oversees all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate education and chairs the University Education Committee. She is also academic lead for the university’s Higher Education Futures institute which takes an innovative approach to supporting the career long development of academic and professional staff who teach and support student learning.

She has previously held posts at Brunel and Loughborough Universities, joining Birmingham in 2010. She became Head of the newly created School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences in 2012, before being appointed to her current role in 2016. Her educational qualifications include an MA in Education at the Institute of Education, now part of UCL.

Her research and teaching have focused on bridging the gaps between theory/research and educational practice. She was a REF 2014 panellist, has contributed to an impact case study for REF 2021, and was a main panellist for the TEF subject pilots. She contributes regularly to national discussions about higher education, and has built strong international connections through the Universitas 21 network.

Welcoming Professor Armour’s appointment, UCL President & Provost Dr Michael Spence said: “This is a critical role for a university with such a strong and vibrant student body, so I’m very pleased that it will be inhabited by someone with such a wealth of insight and experience. Kathleen Armour is renowned as a leading figure in this area and I’m really looking forward to working with her on new ways of thinking about student life on campus.”

Professor Armour said: “I am delighted to be joining UCL at this time of strategic renewal. UCL is an outstanding university and I look forward to working with talented students and staff to build on existing strengths and create an inspirational and sustainable education offer fit for the future.” 

Professor Armour takes up the role of Vice-Provost (Education and Student Experience) at UCL in January 2022.
