UCL

The consultation to develop UCL’s Strategic Plan 2022–27 turns its focus to our academic priorities, with the publication of two new discussion papers on Monday 10 January followed by a Town Hall for staff and students a week later.

The UCL Strategic Plan will set out our goals for the next five years, focusing effort and investment on a small number of shared priorities to be agreed through this consultation process. In the first phase of the consultation, the community discussed our Vision, Mission and values, and the opportunities and challenges we currently face. Explore the conversation so far.

In this second phase, we will discuss our academic priorities for the next five years, starting with the two discussion papers Evolving the Grand Challenges and Academic opportunities for targeted investment before moving onto Education priorities and programmes. We want to achieve the broadest and deepest possible engagement with staff and students, through town halls, workshops, focus groups and open calls for feedback on the published papers. We will then pull together the outcomes of discussions in those phases into a draft strategic plan, on which we will consult again before it is confirmed.

Next steps

Monday 10 January: Discussion papers three and four published on the consultation webpages, together with executive summaries.

Discussion paper three, Evolving the Grand Challenges, and discussion paper four, Academic opportunities for targeted investment, are designed to prompt a conversation about UCL’s academic priorities, proposing a multi-disciplinary programme of activity to address urgent global issues and a process for supporting major developments in academic disciplines.

Monday 17 January: Town Hall*
2.30–4pm – this event will take place online.

UCL President & Provost Dr Michael Spence and Pro Provost (Academic Planning) Professor Geraint Rees present discussion papers three and four. Charu Gorasia (Chief Financial Officer) chairs.

All staff and students welcome. You can join via Zoom.* Captioning will be available. The event will also be recorded and made available afterwards with captioning included.

*The Town Hall was originally planned as a hybrid event but has been moved online given the currently evolving situation.

Sign up for the Town Hall on 17 January

The publication date and Town Hall for discussion paper five, Education priorities and programmes will be confirmed as soon as possible.

The consultation team is also planning a series of consultation drop-ins for students and staff, so that you can talk to a member of the team about the proposals included in the discussion papers and share your ideas. Details will be shared in Term Two.
