We’ve launched the Career Frameworks website to support colleagues in professional services

20 May 2020

The Career Frameworks for Professional Services staff provide you with information about a range of roles across UCL. They also promote three key ways that you can develop new skills and experiences: learning on the job, learning from others and formal learning.

Members of staff using the Career Framework

As part of the Career Pathways project, funded by the TOPS programme, we have created four Career Frameworks. These are designed to provide staff with clear information about the skills and experience required to perform a range of job roles, in different service areas and at different levels of seniority across UCL, which can be used to support and inform ongoing personal and professional development.

In addition to the Communications and Marketing framework we launched as a pilot in February last year, we now have frameworks for staff working in Education Administration and Student Support, Human Resources and Project and Programme Management

To help staff browse through and across these different frameworks, we’ve launched the new Career Frameworks website. The website has information on a selection of job roles within these areas along with case studies written by staff working across UCL, describing their career journey and future development plans. You can also find a description of common experiences within a selection of roles, which can be filtered by specific area of interest or by relevant transferable skills.

Visit the Career Frameworks website

In the context of our current climate the website might be helpful in continuing developmental conversations about future planning for career development and progression. Despite these unprecedented times, it is more important than ever for conversations about our performance and development to continue.

As we respond to Covid-19 in our personal and professional lives and we adjust to new responsibilities and ways of working, it’s likely we will need to review our goals and objectives more regularly. Please visit Developmental Conversations, where you can access an interactive online learning module alongside helpful resources designed to enable staff to have an open, two-way dialogue around goal setting and personal development.

Supporting career development for professional services staff

Career Frameworks support staff to think more strategically about their career progression and development, while providing suggestions of possible learning options through learning on the job, learning from others, or formal learning.

The frameworks also combine the UCL Ways of Working behavioural indicators which set out the expectations for staff at each level; allowing a clear distinction of what good performance looks like in a transparent and consistent way. These indicators allow individuals to self-assess and identify areas of strength, as well as areas where they may wish to develop their skills in order to progress.

The frameworks are also designed to support line managers for annual appraisals, preparing for developmental conversations and to support succession planning.

Further Career Frameworks will be developed and published over the next 12-14 months, starting with Frameworks for colleagues working in IT, Data and Insight, and Operations Management roles.
