Global Citizenship Programme

Broaden your academic experience, develop new skills and get involved in exciting citizenship projects – all while deepening your understanding of important global issues.

What is the Global Citizenship Programme?

The UCL Global Citizenship Programme brings together students from across UCL to explore the biggest global challenges. You will develop citizenship skills like campaigning and social entrepreneurship, while tackling the big issues of our day – from global health challenges, to debates in justice and equality.

The programme includes opportunities to volunteer with UCL's Volunteering Service Unit and to meet employers and organisations offering careers with global impact.

Events are open to all UCL undergraduates and taught postgraduates and take place on the Bloomsbury campus throughout the year, with the majority of workshops taking place in March and June.

Dive into a range of complex issues and develop global citizenship skills through:

  • hearing from experts on global issues
  • interdisciplinary learning experiences
  • group projects
  • engaging with external organisations
  • producing outputs (such as films, posters, social justice campaigns or business ideas)

Programme structure

You can choose one of four ‘strands’ within the programme. Each strand focuses on a specific global citizenship theme:

  1. Active Citizenship
Develop and apply campaigning skills to help solve our biggest challenges

  2. Outbreak! Infectious Diseases
Understand how rapidly a local disease can become a global threat, and how individuals and organisations can combat it together

  3. Power to the Planet!
Examine climate change from the perspective of justice.

  4. Social Start-up
Gain hands-on experience of building a social enterprise.

The programme also includes two exciting opportunities alongside the themed strands:

Choose your own hours

The total number of hours on offer will depend on the strand you choose. Strands offer up to 50 hours of activities over the Spring and Summer terms.

You can choose how you complete these hours within your strand by attending any of the following types of events:

  • Term two talks, seminars and workshops (four to 16 hours)
  • Weekend Challenge or one-day workshop (six to 12 hours)
  • One-week Summer School (25 to 30 hours)

You can also do additional hours by taking up a Global Citizenship Volunteering placement and attending events for Careers with Global Impact.
We encourage participants to do as many activities as you can to get the most from the programme, but if you complete a minimum of 21 hours on the one strand of your choice, you will earn a certificate and a link to the Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR).
