Ieuan Care

What is your role and what does it involve?

I’m the Communications Officer in the UCL Estates Division. I write and record content for the Estates and TransformingUCL sections of the UCL website as well as @UCLEstates and @TransformingUCL Twitter accounts. I also manage the Estates intranet on Sharepoint with my team of three colleagues.

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

I joined UCL in September. My previous role was as a communications officer in a small Higher Education college creating a communications strategy. Before I worked in comms, I did campaigning, and when I was a student I worked as a tour guide, bar back, and barista.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

I am most proud of working in a team that makes real impact to peoples lives, well being and safety.

We respond to incidents such as gas leaks and through working in a team with such specific response skills ensures no one is hurt and that research and teaching is not delayed.

Being part of crisis teams that respond to unforeseen and urgent situations is hugely satisfying.

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list?

I’m working on a video giving students a chance to have their say on the Student Centre after its first year. I’m hoping for some hot takes.

What is your favourite album, film and novel?

Favourite Album: Awaken, My Love! by Childish Gambino
Favourite Film: Cool Runnings – if I’m honest a little part of me will always be sad I never got to be a bobsledder.
Favourite Novel: The old man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

What is your favourite joke (pre-watershed)?

I get told off for my dad humour (puns) but I never actually remember jokes.

Who would be your dream dinner guests?

Marilyn Monroe, Fidel Castro, Richard Ayoade, Eddie Izzard, and Cardi B.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Get more sleep! If you thought tea was amazing, try eight hours a night. But also don’t worry about the future – you do too much of that.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I was born and raised in Liverpool but spoke Welsh at home.

What is your favourite place?

For a holiday? Berlin, Berlin, Berlin.
