Understanding your department’s position in the national league tables using Tableau

21 November 2019

UCL Data & Insight have created a National League Tables Tableau dashboard to help colleagues better understand our rankings in the three major UK league tables.

Using a laptop for study

In the dashboard we have presented the league table rankings at institution and subject level from the Guardian, Complete and Good University Guides in a way that makes it easy to track trends, understand what underpins our position, and see which of our competitors in the Russell group and beyond are sector-leading for each subject. The dashboard will be updated when new league tables are published each year. The dashboard answers questions such as:

  • How has UCL’s rank changed in the last five years?
  • How does my subject rank compare to my competitors?
  • Where can I look to optimise my position in the tables?
  • How is each league table compiled? Where do the metrics come from?

Tableau is a tool that displays complex data in interactive online dashboards, which are accessible, visually appealing and intuitive to use. National League Tables joins existing dashboards on Admissions, Research, student awards and NSS response rates on our Tableau site. You may already have access to Tableau using your usual UCL login credentials, or you can request access by emailing the Data & Insight team at dataandinsight@ucl.ac.uk.

For more information about Tableau and to find out what other dashboards you could access, visit our Tableau support pages.

You can also drop in to our open training sessions if you are new to using Tableau or would like a refresher - the next session is on 25 November, 10am-12pm in 20 Bedford Way, room W3.06. There’s no need to book, and you can drop in at any time during the two hour window.
