Seven Questions with Grace Guan
24 April 2019
This week Grace Guan tells us about getting involved in UCL Global Citizenship. Grace took part in the two-week programme which brings students from across UCL to explore the biggest global challenges, from infectious diseases to rapid urbanisation, over a two week period.
What are you studying, why are you interested in this subject and what do you plan to do in the future?
I am currently doing an undergraduate degree in psychology. The behaviours and thought processes of human beings is a fascinating subject, and I am interested in learning how interactions can bring changes to mental activities. My dream is to become a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist, and I intend on following on a medical career pathway.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve done, seen or got involved with while at UCL?
I love the non-academic side of UCL: the student societies, guest speakers, and The Global Citizenship Programme. There is so much to get involved with, in addition to studying of course. I got involved in parkour at UCL Parkour Society, something I had never thought of trying before, and eventually became a committee member. There I met a bunch of amazing people and overcame a lot of mental and physical challenges.
Have you discovered any hidden gems during your time at UCL?
I love discovering secret shortcuts at UCL. Here are some useful ones: the 3rd floor of the Psychology building and level 7 of the IOE is connected by a door, which is useful if you need to get between the two buildings quickly. Also, you can access UCL through either side of the Bloomsbury Theatre. There is also a shortcut leading from the Anatomy Hub towards the Print Room Café. However, the biggest gem hidden in UCL is the Xint Café in the Psychology building. The sandwiches there are super delicious, and the café serves a variety of delicacies at a price far lower than high street cafes.
Give us your top three things to do/see/go to in London?
- Ride on the upper deck of a London bus, preferably the front row. There are some scenic routes such as routes 10, 15 and 24.
- Watch Regents Park change between the four seasons, from pink to green to amber to white.
- Visit UCL, the global university in central London.
If you were Provost for the day what one thing would you do?
I would treat everyone to a beer.
Who inspires you and why?
Monkey D. Luffy, the main character of the Japanese Manga series One Piece. From watching him as I grew up, I learnt what the pirate spirit truly meant: being brave, innovative, honest, strong, reliable, and independent. Life is like sailing, full of danger and surprise. He encourages me to face the challenges and welcome the surprises and, most importantly, to enjoy life.
What would it surprise people to know about you?
I am a parkour girl.
