Seven Questions with Sisi Lin

13 September 2018

While studying at UCL, Sisi Lin started Sishu, a Chinese school that encourages cultural exchange.

Sisi Lin

Why did you choose to study this subject and how has it informed your career path?

I studied for a Master's in Psychoanalytic Child Development, which definitely fed into my subsequent path. I established Sishu Limited the same year I completed my Master's and work with children who have begun learning Mandarin in a range of capacities from private one-on-one tuition to Saturday and summer schools. My course gave me an insight into how to connect language, culture, and logic to help younger learners develop language proficiency in Mandarin.

What was the most interesting thing you did or got involved with while at UCL?

Beyond my Master's degree, which I found to be stimulating and enjoyable, I think the creation of my company, Sishu, was the most interesting thing I did. I've been able to do so much and have been privileged to have met some wonderful people too.

What do you miss most from your time at UCL?

The friends I made there, in addition to the wonderful facilities and learning environment. Though as Sishu is based at UCL's KX Hub I can't say I have entirely left UCL and often see old faces, which is reassuring.

What one piece of advice would you like to share with UCL students?

Perhaps consider the business applications of your study. UCL's KXHub has enabled me to start a fledgling business without having to worry about a lot of the support element that might stymy others who are just starting out, detracting from the focus that should be on your core business.

If you were back at UCL for the day what one thing would you do?

I feel as though I haven't entirely left. I'm still lucky enough to have the connection I do with UCL, which has been so helpful and I am so grateful for.

Who inspires you and why?

Lillian Shapiro, who is my business advisor and Dr. Saul Hillman, my professor at the Anna Freud Center, who helped me develop Sishu Limited and encouraged me to explore London.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

I do enjoy my food, but despite that, manage not to put on weight. It must be all the energy I use teaching and running Sishu!
