15 March 2018

UCL is delighted to announce that Professor Sasha Roseneil has been appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences (SHS).

Sasha Roseneil

She will be based in the UCL Institute of Advanced Studies as Professor of Interdisciplinary Social Science.

Sasha joins UCL from the University of Essex where she is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor of Sociology. She has led Social Sciences at Essex through an unprecedented period of growth, and has overseen the appointment of more than 60 new academics and the establishment of a new Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies.

Sasha is a sociologist and a group analyst, with broad interdisciplinary research interests and collaborations. She has made major contributions to the study of social movements and gender politics. Her research on intimacy, care and personal life, on citizenship and collective action, on gender and sexuality, and in psychosocial studies has earned a global reputation.

Before moving to Essex in 2016, Sasha was Professor of Sociology and Social Theory at Birkbeck, where she was Director of the Birkbeck Institute for Social Research and held a number of other leadership roles. Sasha's background also includes 16 years at the University of Leeds where she established and directed the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, now considered a world leading centre in the field. From 2005 to 2015 she was Professor II in the Centre for Gender Research at the University of Oslo.

Professor Roseneil commented: "It is a great honour to be appointed Dean of Social and Historical Sciences at UCL, one of the world's leading research and educational institutions. The Faculty brings together an extraordinary group of academics with a huge wealth of expertise and talent, and I am looking forward to working with colleagues from across its departments and research centres, and to strengthening links with cognate areas across UCL.

"Developing the Faculty as a beacon of inclusivity, diversity, excellence and innovation in the social and historical sciences, and ensuring that all students and members of staff are respected, supported and encouraged to achieve all that they can, will be at the heart of my work as Dean."

UCL President and Provost, Professor Michael Arthur, said "It is wonderful to be welcoming Sasha to UCL. She joins at an exciting time for the faculty and for UCL. Sasha brings a wealth of experience in roles spanning academic leadership, management and scholarship, all of which will help shape the future of Social and Historical Sciences at UCL.

"I also want to take this opportunity to thank Professor Mary Fulbrook for her outstanding leadership of the Faculty during her five years as Dean which has seen the departments go from strength to strength and the establishment of the Institute of Advanced Studies."

Professor Roseneil will join UCL on 10 September 2018.
