UCL researchers receive Emerald Literati Award

The winning paper, titled 'What is the score?', aims to provide a helpful overview for researchers and clinicians interested in the theoretical background of football as an intervention for people dealing with mental health issues.

The review, which is funded by the NIHR School of Public Health Research, provides encouraging evidence to suggest football can be used as a tool to further engage people with mental ill health and to motivate them to connect with others.

It reviewed many studies to conclude that participants - those who actively engaged with football - felt more empowered, had higher self-confidence and reported alleviation of their symptoms.

"We are heartened that our review of this novel yet growing area of research has attracted widespread interest and has been chosen by Emerald for this prestigious award," said Dr Oliver Mason.

Dr Bettina Friedrich added: "Using football to increase participants' wellbeing is an interesting field and has great potential to help people with mental ill health, so we are thrilled Emerald has recognised the value in our research."

For over 25 years the Emerald Literati Awards has celebrated and rewarded the outstanding contributions of authors and reviewers to scholarly research.
