Seven questions with Chloe Nettleton

1 February 2018

This week, meet Chloe Nettleton, who is studying Anthropology and has enjoyed the experience of participating in UCL's Global Citizenship Programme two years in a row.

Chloe Nettleton Chloe also has some great tips for places to eat in London!

1. Why are you interested in your course and what do you plan to do in the future?
I study Anthropology at UCL and I'm super lucky because I love my degree and get totally over-into it. I like that it encourages people to be open minded and accepting of others whilst also remaining critical of our own behavior and raising important questions about the nature of humanity.

I am very interested in the health field so would love to work for global aid organisations or gain some medical training in the future. I think my main focus would be women's rights as I believe that their ability to access reproductive education and employment is crucial to solving many public health issues. As with most of my friends however, I am just pretty unsure about how to best achieve that at the moment!

2. What is the most interesting thing you've done, seen or got involved with while at UCL?
There are so many things to get involved with at UCL, it is kinda overwhelming! One thing I would highly recommend is the 'Global Citizenship Programme' which takes place every summer after exams, for two weeks. It is very accessible to everyone and no matter what sort of future employment you are interested in, it really highlights that any skill- be it advertising, law or economics - can make a positive impact on the world!

I took part in the programme two years in a row. The first year I took the 'Health in Future Cities' course, where we were given possible future climatic and economic events and had to pretend we were certain countries, requesting or providing money and resources to those in need. The second year I took part in the Active Citizenship strand where I spent a week at 'Feedback Global', learning how to positively impact society in a number of difference ways. Over the two years, I met some wonderful people whilst also gaining great experience for future jobs (hopefully!).

3. Have you discovered any hidden gems during your time at UCL?

Moving to the bright lights of London from my little village of only 100 people was a fascinating experience and I love how much choice this place gives you. My all-time favorite hobby has to be food so if you ever need someone to eat with, I'm your gal!
My favourite spots would have to be 'Yorica' in Soho for top class frozen yoghurt and ice cream, 'Picky Wops' in Peckham or Fulham for some incredible pizza and 'Ms Cupcake' in Brixton for all things cake!

4. Give us your top things to do/see/go to in London:
My favourite thing to do (providing it's sunny) is hiring the Santander bikes and exploring all that London has to offer that way, as it is super cheap and you can really get to know the place in a different way. My top visiting points include: Regent's Canal (who knew there were house boats in London?!), Regent's Park, Camden Market, the Southbank of the river (a great place to stop for a refreshing Pimms) and Hampstead Heath!

I also love going to the Bloomsbury Fitness gym when I'm around uni as they have some great classes and it helps me feel more normal after some of those late night-early morning combos.

A fun place to visit when friends/family stay is also the Sky Garden as you get awesome views of London and it feels very non-studenty which is always nice.

Finally, obviously, Loop…who doesn't love a good 'sports nite' to brighten your spirits mid-week?

5. If you were Provost for the day what one thing would you do?

If I were provost for the day, I think I would have to make it a meat and dairy free day, because I have recently come to realise how damaging those products are for our environment and health and would love to show people just how tasty alternatives can be.

Failing that I would probably just throw a massive campus wide party to celebrate living in such a beautiful place surrounded by inspiring people…any excuse for music and friends!

6. Who inspires you and why?
It is hard to think of one person who has inspired me the most, obviously aside from my mum and dad. I like to think that every person has something loveable about them so I enjoy meeting new people and finding out what inspires them, as that is a great way to connect with someone. I think it is inspiring to meet people who want to help others, in whatever way they know best, and I hope that is something I can do throughout my life.

7. What would it surprise people to know about you?
I am actually not in England at the moment as I am on exchange at the University of California, Berkeley in the USA. I am having a magical time and would 100% recommend taking a year abroad if your course offers it and it would work for you. I have quite a lot of freedom over the courses I can take here which has meant I can finally learn some Spanish and explore Public Health and Environment courses, as well as exploring San Francisco and the West Coast at weekends. I have also met so many lovely people from all over the world who I know will be friends for life and this experience has given me many opportunities for the future. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions about studying abroad in the US or Berkeley.
