Take part in a paid study examining the effects of ketamine on learning and memory in heavy drinkers

Researchers from UCL's Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit are recruiting heavy drinkers - who want to reduce their alcohol intake - to take part in a study that will examine how heavy drinking affects  learning and memory.

Take part in a paid study examining the effects of ketamine on learning and memory in heavy drinkers

As part of this study, participants may be given a dose of intravenous ketamine, which is an anaesthetic drug with strong psychological effects, or a placebo. Participants will receive £80-£100 for taking part.

Criteria

Participants must:

  • Drink 30 units (female) or 40 units (male) or more per week and drink on 4 or more days per week
  • Seriously want to reduce the amount you drink
  • Be an otherwise healthy and aged 18-65 years-old
  • Be able to attend three testing sessions at UCL
  • NOT be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Agree to be given a single dose of intravenous ketamine or placebo as part of the study

Please note that researchers have other strict inclusion criteria and participants will need to complete a telephone screening to check eligibility for the study.

All drug procedures will take place at UCLH under the supervision of a trained anaesthetist.
