Communication is Key 2017 - Faculty of Brain Sciences

UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences held its second annual Communication is Key event on Monday 19th June 2017 at the Institute of Child Health.

Communication is Key 2017 badges The event was organised by the Faculty communications team: Kate Faxen (Faculty Web and Communications Manager) and Therese Johns (Faculty Communications Officer).

The afternoon began with introductions by Kate Faxen and Geoff Dunk (Faculty Manager) and plenary talks from Ben Stevens (UCL Communications and Marketing) on 'Compelling copy,' and Micah Allen on 'Twitter for neuroscientists.'

Staff then attended two focus sessions, from a selection designed to empower them with new communications skills and knowledge:

  • 'Beginners' guide to Google Analytics, Adwords and SEO,' led by Andy Marriott (UCL Engineering)
  • 'Writing for the web,' led by Clare Kennedy (UCL Digital Presence)
  • 'What makes a great news story?' led by Chris Lane (UCL Media Relations)
  • 'Social media for intermediate users: tips and tricks,' led by Therese Johns (UCL Faculty of Brain Sciences)

Communications Excellence Awards

Between the two focus sessions and after a break for refreshments and networking, the Faculty held its second annual Communications Excellence Awards. These Awards recognise and celebrate exceptional comms work and success in the Faculty. The Awards were presented by Collette Lux (Director, UCL Communications and Marketing). The award categories and nominees were as follows:

Comms targeted at staff:

  • Jake Fairnie (PALS) - WINNER
  • Sarah Lawson (IoN)
  • Nafisa Wagley (Faculty of Brain Sciences)
  • Cynthia Wilson (IoO)

Comms targeted at students/alumni:

  • David Blundred (IoN)
  • Antonietta Esposito (PALS)
  • Sumanjit Gill (IoN)
  • Richard Jardine (PALS)
  • Hannah Spikesley (PALS) - WINNER

Comms targeted at the public:

  • Elodie Chabrol (IoN)
  • Jessica Sells and Cassandra Terry (Prion) - WINNERS
  • Ed Wild (IoN)

Feedback

The event has received very positive and helpful feedback from attendees, which will shape future communications events in the Faculty.
